Old Man on Wall

Description

This is my first proper portrait shot, and I'm pretty pleased with the result. This is the same old guy from previous photos (here and here) - he seems to sit in the same place most days, and I'd taken some candid shots of him before. But today I decided to try and get some portrait shots from him. So I sat went and sat down on the wall about a metre and a half from him.

HIM: Afternoon.
ME: Hi there, beautiful evening!
I then sat in silence for the next minute or so
ME: I'm terribly sorry to disturb you, but I walk past and see you here most days. I'm a photographer and I wonder if I could take some pictures of you?
HIM: O no no, I don't want to have my picture taken. Why would you want to take a picture of me?
ME: Because I like to take pictures of interesting people and I think that you would make for a really interesting photo.
HIM: Oooo, no, I've not shaved or anything. What are you doing with the photos?
ME: That's all right, it adds to your character, I think that you'll look really well, really show your character in a shot. I'm using the photos to add to my portfolio.
HIM: Well, I'm not posing or anything
ME: That's all right, just be yourself.
HIM: O, ok then
I then proceded to fire off 5 or 6 frames from varying angles. I thanked him, I told him I'll sort him out with a print for his trouble (wouldn't do that for every portraiture subject, but seeing as he's my first, and he looks like he would appreciate a friendly gesture).

'Easy' as that. It was difficult to pluck up the courage, but I think getting over that first one will make it easier in future. Many thanks to Dave at Chromasia and Jamey Howard for their inspiration to take some people shots.

PP: Conversion to black and white using Robert Carr technique. Bumped contrast slightly using curves, and applied a dark brown tone layer. I then increased the sharpness using a high pass filtered layer blended using soft light. Burned the background to remove focus from that and provide for contrast, and dodged the detailing on the shadowed side of the man's face.
